If you've known me very long, you've heard my favorite Dave Barry joke. (Everybody has a favorite Dave Barry joke, right? That's not weird?) "I was sad because I had no shoes till I met a man who had no feet... so I took his shoes." The reasons I find that funny probably have a lot more to do with twelve-step meetings than bible proverbs... Anyway, having no shoes is not a laughing matter for some people.
Toms Shoes is a company that sells shoes and every time you buy a pair they give a pair to a child that doesn't have any. In order to raise awareness about the problems people who can't buy shoes face, they are promoting April 8th as a day without shoes. They challenge everyone to go the whole day, if they can, or part of the day if they cannot, barefoot. We'll be going for a walk around our neighborhood shoeless. How about you?
Link to information about the event and the idea. (This post isn't paid for. I just think this is a nice company and wanted to help spread the word.)

I love Dave Barry. :)
It's hard to pick a favorite joke.
A whole day without shoes?
Wow.
That would be hard, since I work in a salon and would be constantly getting other people's hair in between my toes.
Makes me itch just thinking about it.
It's a neat idea for that store to provide shoes to people who need them. Do they only give them to needy kids? What about needy adults who can't afford shoes?
Be careful when you take your shoeless walk around the neighborhood. Watch for stuff like broken glass, sharp pebbles, and dog poop.
It's not weird to have a favorite Dave Barry joke. Definitely not weird.
I'm not able to go without shoes. But I'll check out the store and maybe I can buy a couple of pairs of shoes to donate locally. Then several shoeless folk can get shod!
Janna: This company only does this with children's shoes but I heave heard of another charity that gives away gently used shoes to all ages, even dress shoes to people who need them for job interviews. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the company.
I'll be careful... no way I could go barefoot all day.
Travis: That's a wonderful, generous idea.
Thanks for doing this. I am going to follow up.
My kids and I just finished a unit on child labor around the world. Blew them away, so it did. As they sat there in their $300 sneakers. We are so well off.
