This is the cairn the forest service guys built. It was probably the easiest thing they did all day. They cut logs and moved them off trail and did general trail maintenance which was badly needed because doe creek trail has been very confusing. Last year we got lost on it. Some of the logs these guys cut with a hand saw and moved without machinery were five feet in diameter and larger. In retrospect, I should have made them some cheesecake or something.
Here are some things we learned from them. We very rarely see any official personnel out there, so I am afraid we took up a lot of their time asking questions. I am going entirely from memory here so any errors are my own. If you really need to know this stuff, call the forest service.
1. There are black bears in the Flat Tops but there haven't ever been any reports of aggressive behavior from them. One stole some stuff from a cooler once but never returned to the site.
2. There are two kinds of big cats out there.
3. The twin lakes (very near where these pictures were taken) do not have fish in them (this made us very sad).
4. Sheepdogs are unlikely to eat our small dogs but we shouldn't let Paxton and Mini go walking through any herds, just in case.
