Hand Loaded Slab Wood: The Pictures

Here I am screwing some extra boards to the trailer for support.

Here's Jasmine in front of the pile of wood we had to choose from. This is the hand load slab wood. Slab wood is the stuff left over from when they make boards. Hand load means we can load it ourselves. The nicer stuff gets packaged into bundles that are too big for my trailer, and anyway they are more expensive and there is a waiting list for those bundles this year. This stuff is $10.00 per trailer load and you can't really get any kind of wood cheaper unless you know somebody who is throwing out pallets.

You can see that there are some good sized boards, but most of it is in little chunks, so we had to have a strategy to get a big load of it home.

We used buckets to get it into the trailer and we lined the trailer with tarps. At home Andy and I built a bin to keep the little stuff in. I'll have to get a picture of it another day. With Andy's help we can get two loads in one day but Jasmine and I alone can really only get one. You can understand that we might need quite a few loads to get enough for a whole winter.

that is kinda cool. $10 for a trailer load is worth the effort....

Wow, what a bargain! Wish I could grab a couple of loads of that. We have a heat pump and a fireplace in the new house. We're going to see how this real fireplace thing works VERY soon!

Katherine: It really is, but it's such a pain that I wish I could just turn on central heat.

Real: I hope it's a nice, efficient one. We have a wood stove and it does a pretty good job of heating the whole house. Andy set up this neat system with the thermostat for the heater so that it circulates heat through the whole house.

Whall: It took me a minute, but I laughed out loud. Then I had to explain the joke to Jasmine.

Sandy: It felt like it. We are probably pretty spoiled.

For some reason I am greatly amused by the handmade red-and-white stripey thing on the back of the trailer.
It's like a two-dimensional barber pole by Salvador Dali.
It will be worth millions someday.

Janna: What's really odd is that I totally have the ability and materials to make one that looks nice... but I'm cheap and that was made out of scrap materials. The red is reflective vinyl that didn't make it through the cutter quite right. I think Andy made it way back when we first started making signs. It took me a while to figure out how to properly cut reflective vinyl.
